The Convictor of Hearts

John 16:1-13  Jesus continued, "I have said these things to you so that you won't lose your faith.  (2)  You will be thrown out of synagogues. Certainly, the time is coming when people who murder you will think that they are serving God.  (3)  They will do these things to you because they haven't known the Father or me.  (4)  But I've told you this so that when it happens you'll remember what I've told you. I didn't tell you this at first, because I was with you.  (5)  "Now I'm going to the one who sent me. Yet, none of you asks me where I'm going.  (6)  But because I've told you this, you're filled with sadness.  (7)  However, I am telling you the truth: It's good for you that I'm going away. If I don't go away, the helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.  (8)  He will come to convict the world of sin, to show the world what has God's approval, and to convince the world that God judges it.  (9)  He will convict the world of sin, because people don't believe in me.  (10)  He will show the world what has God's approval, because I'm going to the Father and you won't see me anymore.  (11)  He will convince the world that God judges it, because the ruler of this world has been judged.  (12)  "I have a lot more to tell you, but that would be too much for you now.  (13)  When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into the full truth. He won't speak on his own. He will speak what he hears and will tell you about things to come.

Holy Spirit is better at convicting hearts than I am. Sometimes Christians try to be the one convicting hearts when they simply don't have that power. We should leave this task to Holy Spirit. It does not mean that we should not point out sin or speak God's word but we should allow Holy Spirit to take it to the next level. No one can come to the Lord unless Holy Spirit draws them. We are the messengers of the Gospel; Holy Spirit is the power behind the message. Jesus presented some powerful truths in this passage of Scripture.

1. Jesus warned the Apostles and gave a warning to us in the here and now. There will be people who will persecute and possibly even kill believers. Some will think they are doing it for the Lord. This is a key message when talking about conviction from the Holy Spirit. If we are not listening to His convicting power then we could become the killers of the Saints. How many false believers have already done so in our day? They become the killers of the Saints through their gossip and words of condemnation. Nonetheless, our world is heading more and more to this direction. Already Christians are killed in the name of someone's false God.
2. Holy Spirit is the Helper. Holy Spirit had to come to us. We can not walk in our Christain Faith without the Influence and power of Holy Spirit. Why is Holy Spirit not talked about much?  Even in Charismatic circles? The word helper in this passage means comforter, advocate, or intercessor.  Holy Spirit is all three to us. His presence keeps our spirits in peace and comfort each day we wake up. He is the power behind our communication with the Father; and He intercedes for our behalf. This is why speaking in tongues is so important. Holy Spirit speaks for us. Look at these verses in Romans.

Romans 8:26-27  At the same time the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we don't know how to pray for what we need. But the Spirit intercedes along with our groans that cannot be expressed in words.  (27)  The one who searches our hearts knows what the Spirit has in mind. The Spirit intercedes for God's people the way God wants him to.

There are times where Holy Spirit continues my times of intense prayer by interceding deeply through me. It is a powerful time and part of His work within us.

3. Jesus declared twice that Holy Spirit would convict the world of their sin. He would reveal to the world their evil against God.  He uses us as believers to reveal this truth to the world. When the world sees a group of people who are passionate about the Lord and changed from their controlling sin. Then Holy Spirit steps in and shines His Conviction upon bleeding hearts.

4. Holy Spirit declares the Full Truth. When Jesus released Holy Spirit in greater force on our planet; He brought to mankind the Full truth for all to follow.  He brings conviction to our hearts with the Full truth and will guides us with His truth.

We have to be open to His conviction. His conviction is not condemning or pushy. It is not a heart burn feeling. It is peaceful and nurturing. He reveals to us our heart and compares it to the heart of the Father. When we are in Holy Spirit's presence we soon discover the true intent of our hearts and why we need a Savior. Truly Holy Spirit is the Convictor of Hearts.
